Copyright Registrations Up 1.42% in China YoY for 2022; Software Copyright Registrations Down 19.5%

Per data released on March 21, 2023 by the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC), the number of copyright registrations in China for 2022 was 6,353,144, a year-on-year increase of 1.42%.  However, there were 1,835,341 computer software copyright registrations in 2022, a year-on-year decrease of 19.50%.

According to the statistics of copyright registration information of provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government and the China Copyright Protection Center, a total of 4,517,453 copyright registrations of works were completed in China in 2022, a year-on-year increase of 13.39%.

In terms of the types of works, registrations of fine art works were the most with 2,133,962 copyrights registered , accounting for 47.24% of the total number of registrations; the second was 1,603,228 pieces of photographic works, accounting for 35.49% of the total number of registrations; the third was 349,350 pieces of written works, accounting for 7.73% of the total number; the fourth is 197,806 film and television works, accounting for 4.38% of the total number of registrations.

A total of 1,835,341 computer software copyright registrations were completed in China in 2022, a year-on-year decrease of 19.50%. No reason was provided by the NCAC for the decrease.

Finally, 350 copyright pledge registrations (liens) were completed in China in 2022, a year-on-year decrease of 5.91%.  Of these, 282 were for software.
