China Trademark Registrations Down 29% in 2023

According to recently released statistics from the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) Chinese trademark registrations were down 29% in 2023 versus 2022. That equates to a decrease of 1.7945 million trademark registrations year-on-year.  Foreigners registered 3.1% of the trademarks up from 2.9% in 2022 but a decrease in absolute numbers of 40,696 registrations from 2022 for 134,776 registrations.

Beijing Internet Court Releases Translation of Li vs. Liu Recognizing Copyright in Generative AI

Per Yuan Hao of Berkeley Law, the Beijing Internet Court recently released a translation of Li vs. Liu in which the Court recognized copyright in images created by generative AI. The plaintiff, Mr. Li, used Stable Diffusion (an artificial intelligence) to generate the image involved in the case and published it on the Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) platform; the defendant, a blogger on Baijiahao, used the image generated by the plaintiff’s AI to accompany the article, and the plaintiff sued. …

CNIPA Posts “Development Report on Building a Powerful Country on Intellectual Property Rights (2023)”

On January 18, 2024, China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA)  posted the Development Report on Building a Powerful Country on Intellectual Property Rights (2023) (知识产权强国建设发展报告(2023年)) prepared by the Office of the Inter-Ministerial Joint Conference on Building a Powerful IP Country.  The Report “summarizes the progress of the development goals of building a powerful country in intellectual property and the results achieved in building a powerful country in intellectual property” such as the number of high-value invention patents per 10,000 people.

Huawei U.S. Patent Grants Drop 24% in 2023; BOE Drops Out of the Top 10

Accordingly to analysis by Harrity Patent Analytics, Huawei ranked 10th for US patent grants in 2023, down 3 spots from 2022 with a 24% drop in patent grants. BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. dropped even further to 19th down from 8th in 2022. BOE had a 38% drop in granted US patents. Tencent was 54th this year with an 11% drop in patent grants.
