CNIPA Posts “Development Report on Building a Powerful Country on Intellectual Property Rights (2023)”

On January 18, 2024, China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA)  posted the Development Report on Building a Powerful Country on Intellectual Property Rights (2023) (知识产权强国建设发展报告(2023年)) prepared by the Office of the Inter-Ministerial Joint Conference on Building a Powerful IP Country.  The Report “summarizes the progress of the development goals of building a powerful country in intellectual property and the results achieved in building a powerful country in intellectual property” such as the number of high-value invention patents per 10,000 people.

Huawei U.S. Patent Grants Drop 24% in 2023; BOE Drops Out of the Top 10

Accordingly to analysis by Harrity Patent Analytics, Huawei ranked 10th for US patent grants in 2023, down 3 spots from 2022 with a 24% drop in patent grants. BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. dropped even further to 19th down from 8th in 2022. BOE had a 38% drop in granted US patents. Tencent was 54th this year with an 11% drop in patent grants. Chinese Utility Model Grants Down 25.5% in 2023, Invention Patent Grants Up 15.4% in Shift from Quantity to Quality

In China’s shift from quantity to quality, 25.5% fewer utility models were granted in 2023 versus 2022. Design patent grants were also down 11.5% according to a January 16, 2024 press conference held by the State Council Information Office. In contrast, invention patent grants were up 15.4%. China’s Quantity to Quality Shift in Patents Continues Trend in 2023 Q3

Per recently released statistics from the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), a total of 698,822 invention patents were granted, 1,596,992 utility models were granted, and 487,977 design patents were granted cumulatively through the the third quarter of 2023.  Compared with the third quarter of 2022, this represents an almost 14% increase in invention patents granted versus an over 25% drop in utility model grants and an over 8% drop in design patent grants.
